Commission for Domestic and Foreign Mediator Accreditation

Last updated: 13 Apr 2026

The Commission for Domestic and Foreign Mediator Accreditation reviews applications from mediators seeking official accreditation. It plays a crucial role in ensuring the quality and reliability of mediation in Belgium and abroad. In addition to accrediting mediators in their specific domain, the commission also manages the registration of foreign mediators who have been accredited by a competent authority in their home country.

Powers of the Accreditation Commission

The commission is responsible for:

  • accrediting mediators in their domain;
  • including in the list of mediators based in the EU and those outside the EU mediators who have received accreditation from the appropriate body in their country of origin;
  • developing accreditation criteria.

Accreditation is essential for a mediator to become legally recognised in Belgium. This process ensures that mediators adhere to quality standards and ethical guidelines.

Composition of the Commission

The Domestic and Foreign Mediator Accreditation Commission is made up of a chair or vice-chair and four permanent members. Two deputy members are also appointed. Except for the chairperson or vice-chairperson, each committee has an equal number of Dutch-speaking and French-speaking members. They are appointed for a term of three years.
