Mediators are obliged to update their knowledge and skills on an ongoing basis. This is done through both basic training and continuing professional education. The Federal Mediation Commission (FMC) accredits training courses that contribute to the professional development of mediators and ensures they meet established quality standards.
Continuing professional development for mediators
To maintain their accreditation, mediators must complete a minimum of 18 hours of continuing professional development within a two-year period. The accredited courses are assessed by the Development Commission on the basis of their relevance in terms of content, methodology and the expertise of the instructors.
How should you submit your continuing training file?
Mediators must submit their continuing training file preferably by e-mail, or by post, as soon as they have completed at least 18 hours of FMC-approved continuing training. Use the official form, fill it in clearly and correctly, and attach attendance certificates for each training activity. Trainings not previously approved by the FMC must include the programme or content and a short explanation of their relevance to your mediation practice. Upon receipt, the secretariat checks your file and may request additional information. Complete files are reviewed by the Commission and then submitted to the Bureau for final approval. You will receive a confirmation by e-mail once the file has been validated. Please submit your file on time and only include hours that are eligible (minimum 18 hours of training; up to 6 hours of intervision/supervision, 6 hours of training delivered/publication, 6 hours of trainee supervision). Non-eligible activities (e.g. reading, meetings, coaching sessions, mediation practice) should not be included.
