The duration of mediation is one of the biggest strengths of this form of dispute resolution. Even if the mediator takes time to find a genuine and lasting solution that all parties can agree on, the process usually takes much less time than a court case. Moreover, in mediation, the parties remain in control of the process, both in terms of the search for an agreement as well as the duration of the process.
How long does mediation take?
Experienced mediators recognise that the duration of mediation cannot be known in advance. A mediation process can be completed in two hours. A choice for mediation is first and foremost a decision to search for a resolution that is satisfactory to the parties involved. Even if that ends up taking some time, it is worth the effort. Unlike a court hearing, the parties do not have to comply with the inevitable deadlines of judicial proceedings, as they determine the pace and the final deadline of the meetings in consultation with the mediator. Which is to say that mediation can proceed very smoothly, lasting only a few weeks, or even just a few days or hours.

The duration of mediation is not its only big advantage. For example, the parties in mediation share the costs, or at least agree on them in advance.
